Paint and Quarter Horse Foundation Bulgaria is the Bulgarian partner to the international project “RURAAC: Augmented Alternative Communication for Rural Areas”. The goal of the RURAAC project is to foster the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities (PID) in rural areas by using augmentative alternative communication (AAC) in outdoor experiences, thereby facilitating exploration of the local natural heritage.
But what is augmentative alternative communication or AAC?
AAC is a set of strategies and tools to help people with communication difficulties. It has great potential for application by educators, organizers of outdoor activities, and everyone who wishes to have inclusive activities organized.
The specific objectives of the project are the following:
To develop the skills and expertise of educators working with adults with ID and those working in outdoor education regarding the topic of AAC.
To promote the empowerment of people with ID through the co-design of AAC materials.
To disseminate the results in the local communities.
RURAAC aims to achieve the following results:
● R1: Training modules for educators on AAC with a specific focus on the promotion of natural assets. The training material will be compiled into a Booklet dedicated to AAC for natural heritage.
● R2: A transnational training course on AAC dedicated to educators of adults with intellectual disabilities and educators who promote inclusive outdoor activities.
● R3: AAC materials designed to promote local natural assets (short guides, signs, posters, and more).
● R4: 3 promotion events in 3 partner countries.
